underworld. as always.
Underworld was my first introduction to electronic music. As many baby’s of the 80’s will attest to, our first introduction to electronic music was the Hackers Soundtrack (1995). Absolutely great collection of music, but Cowgirl, now that was the opus. I hadn’t heard lyrics done in a ginsbergian beat, or a rhythm synth that sounded so beautiful. This was the new world and I had just taken my first step off the boat.
Now for some non-storytelling details: Underworld has a beautiful collaboration with High Contrast, called Scribbles, available for free on their website and hopping around many many interwebs. It’s taking some of the most treasured elements in “Oblivion With Bells” and honing them down to a fine edge. And the boys from Wales have also realized something quite important: due to Downpipe, their truly brilliant collaboration with D. Ramirez and Mark Knight, both Rick Smith and Karl Hyde now know they play well with others. Now make sure you get it… go go go. Make sure you have “Everything, Everything” as well… just a suggestion.
For your information, I was surprised pleasantly to find an online memorial for Starkid, called, very simply www.longlivestarkid.com. Now one must have Crayons, your library is not complete without it. There is also a brilliant A2 called “Scribbling on The Walls Mix”, make sure to get a hold of it.
Now Faithless. How does Faithless keep doing it? How does Maxi Jazz keep coming up with hooks? How does a 909 sample always sound fresh? Rollo and Sister Bliss keep making pop hooks and singular dance melodies. Now I have to say, not every Faithless record have been good in my opinion and sometimes the single is really all that matters. But this one has quite a few tunes that are unbelievably catchy and frankly moving. “Sun to Me” “North Star (featuring the lovely Dido)” and “Not Going Home”. There is also an interesting Bob Marley cover (Crazy Bal’heads) and some other noteworthy entries that pay homage to the old skool. Well at this point, The Faithless crew are the old skool.
Quick reviews of some classic Global Undergrounds: GU019 Los Angeles, classic thumping Digweed. Dark, deep, throbbing techno, although I could dig a melody here and there Mr. Diggers.
GU006 Sydney is brilliant trance, the start of progressive house in the mid 90’s.
The Mighty Metronoms are a powerful French House duo and they are doing a mix of Justice and Daft Punk that is frankly filthy. This is the main reason I know who they are Band Of Skulls - Death by diamonds and pearls [MightyMetronoms rmx] on Xfm radio It’s noisy nu disco, hard as hell and plain filthy. Propery, filthy naughty as it were ;)
The Big Pink, Dominos. Listen, now. Remix of “Too Young to Love” on James Lavelle’s GU037, these guys have talent, vision and taste of remixers. Lovely stuff.
