a city much bigger than 7 miles across.
I will be in the San Francisco (the literal translation, Saint Little Frank One) bay area for the next 2 weeks. In my employment for a particular company, [redacted] has graciously provided me room and board while I am trained for my new position as [redacted]. Has something to do with mensa I think ;)
Anyway, this current discussion of music, though it will not stop, may get a bit touristy as I am a huge fan of the Bay and I have not been in over a year. Now the biggest goal is get some hard core food porn from my favourite haunts and to hit Amoeba up for lots of goodies, and these, are my music suggestions for the week, including, but not limited to:
The Dusty Kid’s original release, “A Raver’s Diary” because I want it in hard copy. Yes, I know it’s easy to find on Beatport, but I want it in hardcopy for the album art, fuck off. And, moreover, it is a gorgeous record from a kid who knows how to fuse guitar and sidechained bass to wonderful effect. To continue, anything having to do with Trifonic, Noisia’s Split The Atom, Matt & Kim’s “Grand” is entirely too hard to find in hard copy, the SUPER uber ultra find will be Mr. Johann Johannsson’s masterwork “Fordlandia”. Johann is further proof that something is happening in Iceland that makes the music, on a fundamental level, better. Maybe it’s the volcano, I don’t know. Some old GU’s for some seeding love, primarily Digweed’s 13 (which was taken by an ex) and further search for Reykjavik 024 in hard copy. Also, Zabiela’s first Renaissance Master Series which I have not seen in hard copy yet, but love all the same. Jonsi I only have in lossy, this is something I must remedy. The other tests will be to see if they have a couple random UNKLE releases, most importantly, the unmixed version of “In a State - God Moving Over The Face Of the Water” Lavelle’s greatest mashup and probably his most emotional work ever, which is found on a very particular “Self Defense EP”. I saw it there a few years ago, here’s to hoping they restocked it ;)
Yes this list is extremely disparate, but, if you listen very hard, they fit together, because they are all truly beautiful.
And btw, as you see above, I have a list of records chosen for their oddity or rarity. It is a strong suggestion, that whenever going into a record store of Amoeba’s caliber, such pantheons deserve a list. A true and vigorous test of how good their ordering manager is. Pick your hardest to find record, your most sought after treasure, this game makes for fun travel.
