recently. can’t explain.
So after 72 hours of no music, no headphones and a general avoidance of listening to anything other than human speech (and sometimes even trying to avoid that), my ears are wide open and awake again. Really highly recommend trying this as an experiment, as it does get you thinking about what you would listen to when given the chance. And now “loud” is 3 bars on my macbook pro’s system output, with sound check. Previously, 5 or 6 was the norm. I am shocked at how much help some relativity can give you.
Anyway, I am quite excited by this whole situation as it was, admittedly a bit of a scare to feel a dullness in my most prized experience in life, listening to organized sound. The whole world feels loud again, and I am really quite happy about it. Music excites a bit more than it used to. Really quite an interesting experience. Again, highly recommended to discover what music is to you.
Alright, a band, known as Long-View, popped back in due to a person of great importance to me needing to hear a song called, “I Would”. Namely because, it is an unfortunate fact that we, in particular moments, can not correctly say what it is about that person, or what one’s feelings are for them, or really anything of true importance. Long-View’s “Mercury” & even more importantly, the twin record “Mercury, Subversions” are records of a single theme; the most intimate desire of a single person, the single minded want of that person to share your life with. Am I feeling all of that at the moment? Well we’ll see, BUT, said individual had never heard of Long-View, so I felt quite happy to share. If you have a person you’d like to share such a feeling with, Long-View can help with the particular vocabulary you are hunting for.
But how is it Long-View has never had a solid release or listener base in America? Their production is amazing, the guitars have a warmth taken directly from Oasis and their chunky bowl shaped guitar sounds. Rob McVey’s vocals are smooth, gorgeous and elegantly british. We have a brilliant combination of music features, yet Long-View are all but unknown in America. More interestingly is the other side to this band, their employment of Mr. Ulrich Schnauss (how I discovered them actually), who has remixed them multiple times and has worked on their coming record as a band member. What is so incredible and hard to explain is the fact that Long-View exists as a two part act, a shoegazing based brit rock band, who use strings to wonderful, epic effect, but then also, their wonderful employment of remixing to change the looking glass on their music. Both sides, both themes exist to really help you understand, Mr. McVey’s lyrics are pure desire, the undying need for a person’s love and surely McVey’s muse is quite an amazing soul. If you ever have trouble describing to a person what you feel for them, I imagine Mercury will help you explain properly.
Oh and what was the first song I played when I broke my musical fast? Lights & Music by Cut Copy, a band that, out of the gold mine of talent that is Australia, have almost effortlessly become Indie Dance’s poster boys for brilliance. Where do they come from? Melbourne and everything else are details that do not speak at all to their abilities. Just listen, hit repeat and never stop. Two places that are changing our musical landscape: Iceland and Australia. Is it magnetism? Weather? Why are these two countries literally defining our current musical landscape?
Anyway, keep your headphones on, or not ;)
